| | | Fly with red thorax - any suggestions? Another one from the deep dark woods. Around 10mm. Used flash but I think I have got the colour about right now.
Had a bit of a look around but I'm not really sure where to start with this one. Any pointers? |

| | | Re: Fly with red thorax - any suggestions? In which case, it rather looks like Neuroctena anilis as the most likely. I find Diptera.info is a useful site providing you have the family name to start with.
Thanks for pointing me in the correct direction. |

| | | Re: Fly with red thorax - any suggestions? Sorry guys, don't know about fly families......
Is that some sort of dung fly? It looks similar to the orange/brown ones?

| | | Re: Fly with red thorax - any suggestions? The general shape is quite similar to some forms of Scathophaga but, as far as I am aware, none of them has this deep reddish brown colouration. Also the red legged forms of Scathophaga have a brighter red.
But, don't take much notice of me. I know very little about flies in general and I've never noticed a fly like this one before, that's why I needed to seek expert help.
As I said, I find the Diptera.info site very helpful, providing I can get a family name to start with. Diptera.info - Photo Albums: Scathophagidae |

| | | Re: Fly with red thorax - any suggestions? I would say it is Neuroctena anilis (Dryomyzidae) - very characteristic of woods throughout the year. |

Thanks for the confirmation. |
