| | | Re: Unidentified mosquito with distended abdomen Sorry guys, but....
Am I right in thinking that females have to feed on their target species' blood before they are able to breed?
And that not all species feed on human blood?
Also that Tiger mosquitoes are moving quite quickly up the continent towards us?

| | | Re: Unidentified mosquito with distended abdomen Yes I believe you're right naturegirl - it's only the females that bite and (so I understand) they need to gorge on blood (of their target species) for every batch of eggs that they lay. They need the proteins from the blood to produce fertile eggs. Like the males, females feed on nectar and rotting fruit to provide the energy for flight etc. None of the males survive the winter.
Haven't read about the Tiger Mosquitos yet - but am off Googling to see if I can find out anything.

| | | Re: Unidentified mosquito with distended abdomen Thanks for that Bruce!
Apparently Tiger mozzies can be quite nasty and have quite a bite!
Global warming does have it's negative side, for us certainly!
I think? that they have introduced "Nile/Denge fever" and "Equine encephalitis" to Florida in recent years?
They breed in stagnent water which (apparently) is abundant in Florida.
I am SOOOOO glad that I do not travel abroad these days!!!!
