It looks very much like the other one I've just had ID'd, however the eyes are joined on this one, the other one were clearly separated.
Taken on the Thursley meet back in the summer.
This is the other Hoverfly for comparison

The gap between the eyes is how you sex them, the eyes are Far apart for Females, Close for Chaps.

Can you recommend a book on this group. My 'Insect' books are very superficial in this area. |

FS Gilbert Hoverflies is a cheaper alternative and a good introduction for the beginner.
