| | | Very pregnant Forest Bug Stockgrove Country Park, Beds.
When I first saw this bug I thought I'd come across a new species (new to me that is ).
Well I'm assuming the reason she looks as if she's about to burst is that she's full of eggs. In saying that it had occurred to me that she might be about to molt - but then I guess I've always assumed that it's only the nymph that molt not the imago - is that right?
Any info on what's happening and what's about to happen appreciated. Dorsal view . . . . . . . . . Lateral view

| | | Re: Very pregnant Forest Bug Lovely shots Bruce, it looks fit to burst. Is it not a bit late in the year for it to be breeding, but then I'm not an insect person.

| | | Re: Very pregnant Forest Bug Very nice shots - she certainly looks fit to burst.
I think it might be a Spiked Shield Bug ( Picromerus bidens) rather than a Forest Bug, though

| | | Re: Very pregnant Forest Bug Picromerus bidens overwinters as eggs - so probably quite a good time to be laying them! |

| | | Re: Very pregnant Forest Bug Well, it may be a new one feryah after all ... it's not a "Forest bug" but Picromerus bidens and that one overwinters as egg/nymphs so laying eggs right about now seems a sensible thing to do
Cheers, Arp
P.S. Ahw ... that's what you get for filling up in the coffee dept. while writing

| | | Re: Very pregnant Forest Bug Ron, Nutmeg and Arp - Thanks for your comments and information....and yes it's the first time I've come across Picromerus bidens .
You know right from the start I was uncomfortable with my original ID as she looked somehow "different" to the many Forest Bugs I've seen and photographed before - but in the end I (quite wrongly) put it all down to her condition.
So a very pleasing result for me all round .

| | | Re: Very pregnant Forest Bug The time of year suggests what the others say that it could be gravid, although another real possibility is its been a victim of parasitism. The tachnid genus Phasia are big parasitoids of shieldbugs for example. |

| | | Re: Very pregnant Forest Bug Interesting possibility Dan although I rather hope that she's bulging with her own eggs not the offspring of some parasitic fly. Why? Well I feel a tiny bond with insects that I've photographed (even parasitic flies )
