| | | black beetle with scorpion tail I have just signed up to this because under a jar I have just captured an insect that scuttled, almost zig-zagged, at great speed, across my carpet in West Devon. It is black, about an inch long and skinny. When I touched it with a piece of paper its tail arched just like a scorpion and it froze. I thought it must be a scorpion from a banana bunch or something and ran to get a jar nearby. It was still there, tail arched as I had left it. 15 mins later here I am. Any ideas anyone? Is it poisonous? |

| | | Re: black beetle with scorpion tail Yup, I agree. Devil's Coach horse. (I thought that as soon as I saw the title of the thread - I'd hoped to get there first for once! lol! )

| | | Re: black beetle with scorpion tail They mainly eat snail, slugs and caterpillars not aphids , they are relatively harmless although they do have a fair bite on them. I agree it should be released. |

| | | Re: black beetle with scorpion tail Thank you! Yes that's it... but I have to say, and this is so horrible I know, because I hate killing things - but it got half way out from under the jar and I slammed the jar down (at that point I still thought it might be a scorpion from bananas...) and it got cut in half. This morning - 10 hrs later, both halves are still alive and wriggling around. Unbelievable.... |

I hate killing things - and don't if I can help it.. but it did get half way out of the jar and not being sure if it was a scorpion, I slammed the jar down hard and cut it in half. This morning, both halves are still wriggling away.. looking alive and jiggling around.....I honestly would not have killed it if I could help it.. I was trying to get it outside with my jar... |
