| | | Re: [ID] Beetle It could be a Cercyon, but if it is small then look at Megasternum also - same family of beetles. The shape of the front legs pulls this one out from Cercyon, but the picture doesn't help us resolve it - you need to see the legs from the front/head.

Some Cercyon are tied to dung and rotting material - so moisture is needed but not water.

That is certainly normally the case, but I have a few specimens that are lighter (reddish) toward the base of the elytra that fell into pitfall traps on a grassland survey we carried out on Orkney. The cut-away profile in the front legs will separate them.
I am not saying it is definitely not a Cercyon but offering another possibility.
