The Americans call it The Hobo spider but it is just another Tegeneria species to us Brits!
I have only met 1 other individual who has actually been bitten by such a spider in the UK and that is in 30 years!
I am sorry that you spent any time in hospital let alone 2 days. Were you allergic in any form? Or was it the bacterial infection from it's bite?
Well done you in saving the recent spider and relocating it to a nearby park!!
They really do not want to come upon us in any shape or form and would much rather keep out of our way.
Speaking as one who reacts extremely badly to venom of any kind, I can understand that the shoe is first line of defense but..... I may be killed by creatures like this but at least I would know that they did it in self defense, unlike humans..............................
Naturegirl | it was in my bed, possibly my pj's. the doctor said it probably felt trapped so just started attacking. it started of like a midge bite, but by the end of the day i couldnt walk. when i went to casualty the infection had spread around the top of my leg, so they drew around it to track the infection. the next day it had grown and the bite marks had started to blister. so they opened the blisters and had to drain all the poison out through that. they had to bandage my leg up tight so that the poison would only travel down and not up towards my organs.
it was a bit scary but i got two weeks off work. |

| | | Re: help me please devil's coach horse... You poor thing! What an awful experience for you!
I cannot imagine a large spider like the Tegenarias going unknown into your jim-jams, surely you would have noticed it as you put them on?
I certainly would have known about it!! They would have been off quicker than the blink of an eye!!
It sounds more like the small Zebra spider who is known to cause reactions akin to yours. Being so small, you would most likely not feel the bite whereas with a Tegenaria you would definitely feel it! It does sound more like an infection rather than venom to be honest.
I was bitten by 'something' probably a midge or mosquito on holiday in Norfolk many years ago. Within a couple of hours my leg was hugely swollen, hot and skin stretched so tight I thought it would split!
I went to my local hospital and was put on intravenous antibiotics but, like yours, it took several days to clear up.
