If they were immature (nymphs) then they would be silent. This would make sense to your query. Once they reach maturity they will then produce the sound. |

This site looks like a great resource for North American orthoptera, and it has a really interesting page about Gryllus, which suggests that the taxonomy above might have to be treated cautiously.
Can't trace any more about the 'silent' bit, but suspect that it is a reference to the mode of sound generation (wings or legs).
All completely off subject for WAB, but very interesting!
