| | Highland Midge Distribution Why is the Highland Midge confined to NW Scotland? Is their range primarily limited by habitat, or climate? I know they need wet, acidic soils, but don't lots of areas of the UK have that? They are killed off by frosts, so why are they not more common further south in Britain, in upland Wales for example? |

| | | Re: Highland Midge Distribution I wonder if it's a predation issue? Are there any species of bird for example that don't like Scotland (or at least the climate)? I guess a particularly strong colony of 'Greater Geordie Midge-eater' could act as a barrier, too! |

To ensure maximum annoyance to me on my annual trips!
I am sure that there is a biological reason but that is far from my mind when I itch and scratch and come out in red lumps.

| | | Re: Highland Midge Distribution I've met them in the Devil's Punchbowl in Surrey. I know them well from the Scottish Highlands, so I wasn't mistaken!
This is the only way I know to guarantee beating midges: http://www.midgejacket.co.uk/
