Nocturnal hornets

I live in mid devon and have, over the past few weeks, had european hornets in and around my house. Curiously, I only see them at night. I frequently hear tapping on the lounge window late at night, only to see several hornets flying around outside and bumping into it. If I leave a window open I can end up with half a dozen crawling or flying around my house at midnight.

Can anyone tell me if hornets are - at least partially - nocturnal?

They are attracted to light. Not strictly nocturnal but will have periods of activity during the dark.

Moth trappers are sometimes plagued by them. Not only do they run the risk of getting stung if they accidentally put hand or foot on one, but when they get in the trap the Hornets wreak havoc on the moths
