| | | Insects of Crossness NR I haven’t managed to get out with a camera much recently, partly because of the weather and partly because real life keeps getting in the way. But last Sunday I managed to strap on a macro lens and get down to my local reserve at Crossness for a little over 5 hours. The place was absolutely heaving with insects and I managed to get shots of 26 different species.
With the help of JonSadler, 2Dogs2000, Action Man, Jason Green, oxycera, Geoff F, Dogghound and eucera I now have at least a tentative ID for all of them, so here they are – butterflies first:
Meadow Brown . . . . . . Gatekeeper . . . . . . . . . Large White
Small Heath . . . . . . . . Speckled Wood . . . . . . Holly Blue
A couple of moths:
Nettle Tap . . . . . . . . . Grass moth
Two beetles:
Soldier Beetle . . . . . . . Melyrid Beetle
A pair of flies (these two were both sun-bathing on the same wooden seat and kept trying to chase each other away):
Greenbottle . . . . . . . . Flesh fly
Crickets and grasshoppers:
Long Winged Conehead . Lesser Marsh Grasshopper . Speckled Bush Cricket
Three species of bug:
Final instar nymph of Sloe Bug . . . . . . . . Fifth instar nymph of Green Shield Bug . Bronze or Woundwort Shield Bug
A common froghopper:
That’s nineteen species – seven to go!

| | | Re: Insects of Crossness NR A pondskater:
An Ichneumon wasp:
German wasps, busy chewing up the boardwalk to make wood pulp for their nest:
A couple of bumblebees – I’m pretty sure the first is the garden bumble bee, Bombus hortorum, and I think the second could be a brown-banded carder bee, Bombus humilis. This species has been recorded at Crossness, however this could be a young, fresh Bombus pascuorum:
Cinnabar moth caterpillars:
And last but not least, a dronefly:
All in all I'd call that one of my better days!

| | | Re: Insects of Crossness NR Thanks Julie! Sometimes even the most fragrant and perfectly formed threads sink without trace. This one certainly did!
These were all taken in the protected area that we visited on Sunday or in the field between the protected area and the road. I didn't get over to the Southern Marshes that day.
We get a good variety (nine or ten species) of dragon and damselfly there too and a fair few spiders.

I consider a good photo of 2 or 3 species a good day, and the odd days when I get say 10 very good, but I dont think ive had that many good species in a day! |

| | | Re: Insects of Crossness NR Cheers guys!
I suspect this one snuck past because I posted it at 2pm on a Sunday afternoon in August when anyone interested in insects would have been out looking for them, not stuck indoors in front of a computer.
