Welsh Clearwing found in Sherwood Forest

I've just noticed this on the This is Nottingham webpage:

Rare Moth found in Sherwood Forest

The Welsh Clearwing was refound on Cannock Chase in 2006, after being last seen in 1922. See here.

I think this was a BAP species in the original programme, but the research work resulted in it being found in more locations. However, AFAIK, it has never been recorded in Notts before, although its exactly the right habitat.

I can confirm that Synanthedon scoliaeformis(Welsh Clearwing) is resident within the Sherwood Forest NNR, Nottinghamshire. 47 males were recorded during 2009 together with several Synanthedon vespiformis(Yellow Legged Clearwing) I am still finding WC exit holes all over the NNR and they have been reported from areas close to Sherwood Forest as well.

If anyone wants to get a glimpse of these magical moths I will be carrying out more survey work during June/July 2010 so please feel free to join me. As far as I am concerned the more recorders the better

I have included a pic of a male WC and an exit hole found in mature Silver Birch.
