| | | Svensson's Copper Underwing Hi all,
This came to light last night, it wasn't cooperative enough to let me get a shot of the underside of the hindwings but from the head-on shot I think it's Svensson's Copper Underwing because of the pale tips to the labial palps. Am I right???
Cheers
Will

Svensson's is out earlier ( July - Sept) than the Copper which is on the wing August- October. You really need to see the underneath of the hind wing to tell them apart. I use empty cotton bud pots, they are clear all round so it's easy to see the underwing.
Have you got Skinner's book Moths of the British Isles? Or something similar?

| | | Re: Svensson's Copper Underwing Hi NatureGirl, I've got Townsend, Waring and Lewington's concise guide to british moths. The thing about the palps was on the UK moths website, though to be honest I had to look up where they were. The book gives the inner v on the crossline being lower than the adjacent one as a possible distinguishing feature but I wasn't sure about it.

| | | Re: Svensson's Copper Underwing So based on the head on shot, am I right in saying that the palps are dark with pale tips which makes this a Svensson's?

| | | Re: Svensson's Copper Underwing Yes, Svensson's. The dark palps (C. underwing's are pale) and orange leg bands (C. underwing's are white) are good signs. |

Sorry Jason.

| | | Re: Svensson's Copper Underwing Hi,
We had a storage container installed about three months ago, within a couple of weeks we found that it was being used by these moths - Svensson's Copper Underwing ? - Wild About Britain Pics Svensson's Copper Underwing ? - Wild About Britain Pics
which seem to be Svensson's (not very good photos I'm afraid). There are about 40 that group together in the corners of the door housing.
Are they Svensson's ?
