queen wasp ? Bee ?

Hi guys, haven't been on for a while as v busy. This rather large thing landed in my garden earlier near the pond and has been back and fore since. First thought was hornet when ran from it, however, from photo think it's maybe a queen something ? Any idea pls ?

Looks pretty 'fat' Lily. I bet you were pretty scared what with what they can do to you Having said that, I have no reaction to stings and I'd have been legging it too

I don’t think it’s a Bee or a Wasp, looks like a fly to me, passably a Hoverfly although I wouldn’t like to say which one.

Isn't it bit big for hoverfly ? Was over an inch long and very wide ?

I agree with ferret looks like fly from the little bit I can see of the eyes we get really large hoverflies in our garden and dart at you as they protect their patch

I've just been through the whole collection of european hoverflies online and I can't say I'm convinced this is my insect Keeping in mind this was nearly the length and width of my thumb are we sure there's no other options ?

It's a horsefly - and one of the 'biggies', so very likely Tabanus sudeticus.

I think they do bite. Are you allergic to any bite or just stings..
I really feel for you... hope the treatment works for you.

I don't really know if these go for humans or not - I 've only ever seen one and it showed no interest in me (unlike the local Chrysops that were a real pain in the **** today)
