On the windowsill but is it a window-fly?

I would say it is a female Coenosia tigrina, which is related to the houseflies.

Merci bien, many thanks Laurence. I could not find it in my reference/identification books but your supposition led me to this web site:

It could be the sister of my fly - pity about that pin though!

It's the broad orange tips to the femora and orange tibiae which generally give it away. In life the fly has a very characteristic shape. BUT there are some females of Helina which have this coloration.
