| | | huge humingbird like bee? In the garden yesterday, we watched a huge (1 inch) long insect, it behaved exactly like a tiny hummingbird, hovering from flower to flower and had a long proboscis, it paused a few seconds on each flower and wasn't particular colourful. Anybody know what it could have been, I've never seen anything similar.

| | | Re: huge humingbird like bee? Yep most definately a Hummingbird Hawkmoth, they are superb little insects. They seem to be appearing more regular these days than a few years ago. We had a couple visit our garden last year, they seemed most interested in the Verbena Bonarienis and the Lavender, and had a good feed at each plant. One visited us earlier this month but none of the plants they like are in bloom yet so he diddn't stay long enough for us to photograph him...... shame!!! Lucky you Peter at lest your plants are in bloom!
