| | | Unidentified large wasp like insect Has anyone seen this insect before? I have no idea what it is or even if it is native to the UK.
I have uploaded a picture to the archive Gallery and would appreciate it if you guys could have a look and let me know your thoughts on specied and origin.

Its a Horntail - a type of Sawfly which are related to wasps.
It is native. |

As said it is a Horntail, Giant Wood wasp and is in fact a Sawfly not a wasp at all and is completely harmless! Really!
It is native? (possibly introduced?) to England and I believe it's larvae live in Conifers and such like woodlands.
The 'Sawfly' part refers to their ovipositor which acts much like a saw when laying it's eggs and is able to dig deeply into tough wood.
