| | | Bee - Melitta Haemorrhoidalis One evening at dusk in early June 2004 I found bees lodging for an overnight stay in the flowerheads of Campanula in my South Croydon, Surrey garden. Last summer we had no Campanula and no bees! With Campanula this year, the bees returned early this month. The plants have now ceased flowering and the bees have left. Can anybody kindly ID the bees in question from the attached pics? Thankyou. |

| | | Re: Bee ID Hi! Its a great shame that these are not in clear focus because there are some very interesting bees that associate with Campanula. I have a feeling that these are all specimens of Melitta haemorrhoidalis. I think I can detect a reddish hair fringe on the tail end of one in Pic 1.
Whatever they are (and the Melitta seems a reasonable suggestion), it is unusual to see so many in a single flower.

Thankyou for confirmimg your original suggestion of Melitta Haemorrhoidalis is almost certainly correct. They were approx. 7mm in length.
You previously asked about the weather conditions. This did not seem to affect the position but we generally they were dry/sunny.
For the record I reckon that the colony at its peak was well in excess of 100 bees.
Thanks again for your help and interest.......................Brian | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
