I saw this large hoverfly today, at least twice the size of most small Hoverflies, ie. marmalade fly and banded etc. I thought it was Volucella Zonaria because it was approaching that size but on comparing photos from last year and on the Gallery here, it has too many rings on the body. Has anyone any ideas please? |

Has anyone any ideas please? | Possibly Sericomyia lappona, a species often associated with bogs. You're right it's definitely not Volucella zonaria which I'm seeing most days at the moment. |

it seems to have wedge shaped bars , so I would go for Sericomyia silentis.

Pretty sure you are correct Neil. Just had a browse at other photos of Sericomyia silentis and they all appear to match mine. Sericomyia lappona seems to be a black and white insect, mine was def yellow. Eh but thanks for helping. | | |
