Striped hoverfly
Today I was watching quite a large hoverfly in my garden which had sort of diagonal black and white stripes down it's back.

What really took my attention was that it was 'hunting'? all over flowers and foliage but never once did it go to the nectar rich flowers that I have provided?

Why was it doing that? I thought hoverflys lived on just nectar?

I'm sure you guys will know the answer

It sounds rather like Scaeva pyrastri. It may have been investigating the palatibility of the plants in your garden and definitely not hunting.
