Does anybody know if there is an 'official' spelling of the common name for the Syrphidae?
Should it be Hover Flies, Hover-flies or Hoverflies, as I have seen all three versions on various websites and in books ....  |

As far as I'm aware, it should be Hoverfly or Hoverflies.

I would have though hoverfly or hoverflies - capitalisation only for proper nouns and generic names. Quote: |

On second thoughts, it's all coming back to me, with true flies (Diptera) is proper to use (e.g.) hover-fly whereas for non-dipteran 'flies' it is (e.g.) caddis flies, alder flies. Where does that leave us with sawflies? But not a capital letter in sight! Quote: |
