| | | Help with insects, please Here is where again I set myself as the Aunt Sally of WAB insect identification.
I spent a fruitful afternoon in the garden over the weekend and offer some beasts for naming (along with some ideas of mine)
1. Is this a cuckoo bee, please?
2. I have no idea what this is - it was very small - about three eighths of an inch
3. Could this be a tawny mining bee?
4. How about a Syphus ribesii?
5. What about a Dexia rustica
6. I have no idea what this spider is - it is about a quarter of an inch across
7. Might this be a red-tailed bumble bee
Thanks

I'll start the ball rolling?
#3 - No mining bee. More like a Common Carder Bumblebee. (tho I'm sure Eucera will correct me if I'm wrong).
#6 - Looks like a (Garden) Cross spider(ling).

| | | Re: Help with insects, please The hoverfly (# 4) is Episyrphus balteatus : it's the only one with two black bands on the third and fourth abdominal segments. Once you've got it's jizz you'll see it everywhere. |

| | | Re: Help with insects, please 1 Certainly a male cuckoo bumble, and in this case, I can say with certainty this is Bombus vestalis - I can see that Antennal segment 3 is much shorter that 5
3 Carder Bee, B. pascuorum
7 Red-tailed Bumblebee, B. lapidarius B. lapidarius seems really quite scarce this year. The males are now out and about | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
