| | | Re: Horsefly? Looks like a cleg fly - Haematopota pluvialis possibly?
there's another species which is similar, but you'd need to check the wing cells apparently Haematopota pluvialis (Linnaeus, 1758) (Notch-horned Cleg)
Not a sting but a bite!
Horseflies remove flesh rather than suck blood, ouch! (sweeping statement, not sure if they all do?)

Beware these horrible little monsters pack a very mean bite, they draw blood and leave you with a lump the size of a golf-ball that will itch insanely for days!!!!!!!!! |

| | | Re: Horsefly? I was very interested in this thread as coincidentally I photographed one of these flies this afternoon (first I've seen). I got pretty close (well perhaps 6 -8 inches) and had no idea that it could give me a nasty bite. Are they usually aggressive or do you have to be a bit unlucky to be bitten?

| | | Re: Horsefly? Hi,
the males are fine. The females will track you down at 1000 yards and come for you in squadrons. I had one trying to bite me through my T-shirt!

| | | Re: Horsefly? About 6 of these fancied my blood yesterday while I was on Horsenden Hill- I've got some little bumps today. Mind you most won't be biting again!! | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
