| | | Damselfly ID Hi,
Could someone tell me what this Damselfly is, i've had a quick perusal through the Gallery but no luck and also the British Dragonfly Society website with the same results! I'm sure it's very common and i know the pic isn't all that great, but i've found myself collecting Dragonfly photos, more so seeing how close i can get without them flitting off!! The other i attach is how close i did get yesterday evening to a Common Hawker! |

| | Re: Damselfly ID The first photo is a female Blue-tailed Damselfly of the form violacea.
The second photo looks like a Southern Hawker to me, with broader ante-humeral stripes (on thorax) than Common Hawker; also the mushroom- like black mark on the frons (infront of eyes) is typical of former species + not the latter. |

I have had a quick look at the few pictures of my own of Common Hawker and they seem to have a similar black mark. Is it the close-up shape (as shown very well above) that is different?

Richard | Perhaps I was a bit rash about this feature; looking in Dragons of Europe says that T-mark on frons has thick stem for Common Hawker. The shape is a bit different to Southern Hawker, but I'm not sure how variable this feature is?
Rarely see this feature in the field unless dragon is settled. |

cloughie89: Nice pics and well done on getting so close to the Hawker.
