3. Looks rather nice. Reminds me of a fungus weevil, but I could be barking up the wrong tree. |

| | | Re: 5 insects to ID from the Priory Water meet. 2 - looks like one of mine I posted a week or more ago which Oxycera helpfully id'd as "a Tenthredo. One of the 'arcuata' group."
I have since looked these up to find that there are 12 sp in the arcuata group so an exact ID will not be possible from a picture alone.
5 - I would like to know what 5 is myself as I saw it in a garden yesterday. It had striking apple-green thorax and a red abdomen/elytra.

It appears that I might have problems with these ID's.

| | | Re: 5 insects to ID from the Priory Water meet. 3 is a beetle, looks like it could be Platyrhinus resinosus, but hopefully other opinions may follow.
4 is a Ptychoptera sp. |

| | | Re: 5 insects to ID from the Priory Water meet. 1 - agree, Cercopis vulnerata
2 - sawfly would be the limit of my knowledge!
3 - weevil, Platyrhinus resinosus (usually associated with the 'King Alfred's Cakes' fungus on Ash trees)
4 - fly, genus Ptychoptera (family Ptychopteridae, often grouped in with the craneflies although not really closely related to them)
5 - soldier fly Chloromyia formosa (male), which has been given the English name of "Broad Centurion". Note the hairy eyes.

| | | Re: 5 insects to ID from the Priory Water meet. Just a point about the 'arcuata' group; I am referring to either arcuata/nitidior/notha. The last two were formerly acerrima and schaefferi f.perkinsi. So they are a bit of a nightmare and for all I know may have changed again. Best thing to do is to ignore them, like I do! | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
