Thanks | I would be interested to see what others think but I think the lower one at least is a Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary.

| | | Re: Fritillary for ID Thanks Clouded Yellow, the two shots are of the same butterfly. I've just had a look on the UK butterflies website and the wing patterning for Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary does seem to fit |

I also don't wish to give 'duff gen' but I reckon that underwing is unmistakable. I guess SPBFs are on the wing now but, although I have visted Gaitbarrows in the past, I don't know if they occur there.

Richard | Yep, I agree, a Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary, that underwing is quite different from any other British Fritillaries.

| | | Re: Fritillary for ID The clincher is the black chevrons bordering the white outer pearls on the underwing. Pearl Bordered has red chevron borders. About three weeks ago there were oodles of pearl bordered at Gait Barrows and no SPBs.
Sadly, I didn't see any Duke of Burgundies there this year either.

| | | Re: Fritillary for ID Thanks for the ID pointers, I had Glanville Fritillary and Heath Fritillary in Southern France last month that I've posted in the sister site WATW Gallery. I had fun identifying them from the underwing pattern
I've had no luck with Duke Of Burgundys at Gait Barrows this year either. PMG posted a couple of excellent photos of a couple of males she saw at the site. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
