| | | Bee-flies Howdy, bit soggy today isn't it :P been out doing traffic surveys which is particularly entertaining when it's so wet your paper disintegrates before you can write anything down. Was looking at some pictures of a sunnier time and found these bee-flies which I never managed to ID. Both were taken in Southern France not the UK unfortunately but I was wondering if anyone had any ideas
Taken April 06 slightly smaller than Greater Bee-Fly 
July 07 much much smaller <5mm I think

| | | Re: Bee-flies Not sure what they are but are bee flies quite rare? as i have only ever seen one and it was on heathland so i think it could be the heath bee fly, i thought it was pretty cool, i managed to video it and take some pics but the pics werent exacatly brilliant! |

| | | Re: Bee-flies The only one I see regularly is the Greater Bee-Fly which has a dark band across the top of its wing, I'm sure they'll be pictures of it in the Gallery. |

I notice that there is a BAP for Bombylius minor but B. major is quite common, if local. Since they're parasites they are never going to make huge population numbers (unless their hosts make even biiger numbers!  )
You'll need to look in fairly natural grass and scrub land ... Quote:
