| | | Re: Jet black dragonfly i.d. help I have to agree with LindaB.
I think we can confidently rule out Black Darter.
From all the evidence presented I would say it could well have been a male Beautiful Demoiselle, they can look incredibly dark if the light catches them right, plus they are quite common in Southern areas.
Have a look at this, it was taken in Hampshire last Summer. |

I know where you were coming from, as in some ways Black Darter is the only black bodied species, but other factors suggested it probably wasn't that.
The original post didn't mention the dark wings which would have given the game away about the real ID of this.

I have no doubt that your dragonfly will turn out to be a male Beautiful Demoiselle as well, like the one seen by the original poster (have a look at the photo posted above by Fourwings - remember that they can easily look all black unless the sunlight catches them).
Roy.
PS. It's probably better to start a new post rather than re-opening an old one (less for people to read through to get to your question!).
dmclean2: I'm not convinced that the photo that you posted is a Black Darter. It's a very old female darter, which I would say could easily be a Common Darter. |
