| | | Large beetle/bee thing with stinger When in bed last night I was disturbed by a scratching on my window - as if something was fluttering against it....upon inspection I discovered it was an insect fumbling around trying to fly off in the leaves on my window sill....would like some help in identifying this CREATURE.....nearly ran a mile when I saw it...the most horrifying thing I have seen in a while!
Was brownish in colour...varying in colour - not stripy as much as a wasp or bee but with some varience in the tone - but mostly brown...
it was BIG...and i mean - really big - about an inch and a half long and very fat - its body curved under ending in a large black stinger like thing...could possibly have been an 'ovipositer' but to me it looked like a stinger.
The body was not jointed...except for its head - the head had stalk like antennae coming off it...quite stumpy ones...some of the antennae were almost T shaped. I took some pictures but they are poor as it was night and the flashed bounced off the windows.- if anybody feels they would like to see them however - just ask and i shall post them up.
It DID have TWO wings and legs. It appeared to be trying to fly but with limited success.
please help with identification if anybody can....would just like to ensure that this beast cannot 'bore' into the household or sting viciously.
thank you

| | | Re: Large beetle/bee thing with stinger Hi and welcome to the site,
You could try looking at pictures of Cockchafers (a.k.a May Bugs), your description sounds quite like one of these and they are attracted to light so often end up at lit windows at night.
If it is one of these then they cannot cause any harm to either you or your house, I think that their larvae can sometimes damage plants but that's only when there are large quantities of them.

the feathery antennae are just right and the descriptions say that theyre often bouncing into windows on warm summers nights!
thank you very much for the heads up - the fact that its harmless consoles me a little bit but the fact that theyre often found in large numbers does NOT haha!

| | | Re: Large beetle/bee thing with stinger I found one in my watering can last night trying to do the breast stroke
I helped him out and showed him to my daughters before releasing it in the garden. They really are clumsy fliers and end up in all sorts of places
