| | | Insect ID - hornet mimic Hello
Can anyone help me identify this specimen? It was 45-50mm from head to abdomen tip. Apologies for the poor photo. Its taken with a 2mp mobile phone.
Thanks |

| | Re: Insect ID - hornet mimic There are 3 Cimbex species in Britain. This appears to be the rarer Cimbex connatus. It has one record on nbn website (for 2004) and a few more at the NH Museum in London.
This specimen was found on 19/7/08 in Warwickshire in a fisherman's bivouac, and not in a lorry as first posted. |

| | | Re: Insect ID - hornet mimic Yes, the photo appears to almost certainly be Cimbex connatus. It was photographed on 18 May in Cardiff. A subsequent visit to the site on 13 July revealed a single fifth instar larva on Italian alder.
I've been told they are very likely the first records from Wales. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
