Wasp nest?

Found an acorn-shaped construction yesterday in my daughter's Wendy house. It's about 3.5cm high and pale grey. Texture like the inside of an eggbox.

Sounds like it's a queen nest of a social wasp - like Vespula gemanica. Easy to deal with at this time of year should you wish to. When the queen is absent, it is safe to remove it. Do not wait until there is a brood of workers around!

Hi Tony, and a warm welcome to WAB, If you don't want to get rid of it yourself have a look in yellow pages , we have a service down in Kent called "the Wasp busters" see if you have something similar,

Thank you for your prompt and informative replies; it's sites like this that make you realise what a great thing the Web is, and how helpful people can be.

The nest is no more, I'm afraid. It was such a beautiful little thing - such a shame to remove it. Had it been almost anywhere except the Wendy house, I'd have left it in place.
