| | | Male Holly Blue? Is this a male Holly Blue butterfly? It has only thin black edges to the wings. It's obviously not on a holly bush, but it was next to one! |

| | Re: Male Holly Blue? Hi,
Yes, it would appear to be. As you probly know, the male HB is paler coloured than her.
Take care,

My camera is up the creek...

| I meant the flash may have bleached out the shade of blue, not the camera's colour rendering.

This one that I photographed on Thursday is presumably a female, because of the broader black edging to the wings. Shame that you can only see one wing!
I know they are common, but for some reason (perhaps because we don't have holly in our garden!) I was blissfully unaware of them until I saw one last Spring. I think I only saw them once or twice more last year, but now I've seen two in two days, so I'm getting better at spotting them!
I didn't know that the male had less black on the edges of the wings, or that he was paler, until I checked my book (Collins Gem) this afternoon. I was pretty sure the one I saw today was a Holly Blue (it was by some Holly, it was blue!) but I'd expected there to be more black on it, as I'd apparently only seen females before.
Thank you both for your comments! |

| Interesting, another way to define the sexes.
When you positively identify a new species they often seem more common! |

Not so bad after all!
I've re-loaded it under your name. |

Mrs. Fish: Like you have, using the flash for Macros in my experience is often advantageous in producing sharper, higher-contrast pics. However, to avoid overly-bright results perhaps try turning down the Exposure Compansation if possible?
