| | | Large bright red beetle Red - Beetle - Dictyopterus aurora - BugGuide.Net
I saw, what I am 99% sure was this beetle today in the Eco garden at my son's school. I wonder if anyone can tell me more about it. The children were very interested as it landed on me and we were able to study it for a time. I have never seen such a bright beetle of such size. It was nearly an inch long and had a liking for the flowers on my dress!
I have trawled the internet but cannot seem to find much information. According to the link the beetle is Dictyopterus aurora - Golden Net-wing.
Many thanks |

| | | Re: Large bright red beetle Was there any lily's near the beetle..Did it look like this. This is a lily beetle not native to the UK. But decimates lily's.
Look at this thread there is another red beetle called a cardinal beetle and does not eat lilys and is native to the uk. http://www.wildaboutbritain.co.uk/fo...-red-chap.html |

| | | Re: Large bright red beetle Dictyoptera aurora is only about a centimetre long, and is associated with Scots Pine. As a native in Britain it is only found in Scotland, although it has turned up elsewhere occasionally imported with timber.
Another possibility might be one of the Cardinal beetles, either Pyrochroa coccinea (with a black head) or Pyrochroa serraticornis (with a red head) - these get up to about 2 cm.
Welcome to WAB!

| | | Re: Large bright red beetle Hello, thank you for your replies.
There were no lilies nearby, we are near the River Severn in the Midlands. The Red Cardinal beetle looks the closest, the beetle was pillar box red, it had long, flat sides but I would say it was more like 3cm long and about 1cm wide.
My son is doing a 'mini-beasts' project at school and would be very excited to identify this insect! |

| | | Re: Large bright red beetle Yes, a cardinal beetle seems most likely - you are probably exaggerating the size of the beast unintentionally: we don't have beetles that large in UK! Quote:

My son said it was in the grounds again today. Tommorow I intend to take my camera along when I pick him up and we can do some exploring. |

That's great ... and even if you don't find it, he'll have good fun hunting for it! Good luck ... |
