| | | Cuckoo Bee? I photographed this bee feeding on a dandelion at Caergwrle, Flintshire, Wales on 26th April. Unfortunately it was only shot I took of it. Please can someone help me with the ID. Is it some sort of Cuckoo bee?
Thanks |

| | | Re: Cuckoo Bee? I would say that its one of the social bees, despite the wings looking smoky in this picture;
1) The overall hairy appearance of the bee (though by no means conclusive on this pic)
2) More importantly, the flat, broad and shiny hind tibia which are the features to indicate a pollen basket (when not full of pollen of course).
I'd guess pratorum (hint of red tail hairs?) from the pic but could be something totally different from this photograph. Flower and shape of head suggests its one of the shorter tongued species at any rate.

| | | Re: Cuckoo Bee? I think Pratorum OR Terestris. Both bees have similar colouration apart from the last abdomen band. (Terestris=white, Pratorum=red), though I am tempted to say Terestris. |

| | | Re: Cuckoo Bee? I would agree completely with Total_Bombus in assigning this to a social species. I would also tend to go for B. pratorum. There is a red tail (surely?) and the yellow is much more yellowish than the dark old-gold more typical of B. terrestris.
In queens of B. terrestris, the terminal tail band is often a peachy-buff colour rather than white. There are still queens of terrestris about too. |

| | | Re: Cuckoo Bee? Yes sorry should have said, although it wasn't obvious in the photo there was a red tail so I'll go for Bombus pratorum
Thanks guys |  | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
