I'm pretty certain it's a velvet mite, I am not many miles away from you and I have seen them fairly frequently. Ticks are not found scrabbling about, they wait at the top of grass etc. for poor (or rich) sappy things to walk past. I think they were a source of dye at one time. Must ask the Little One, she is dye expert.
