| | | Slugs I've photographed a few slugs recently and was wondering if anyone could help me ID them. I've had a look at the slugs in the Gallery but I'm not sure any of these match.
The first three were taken at Caergwrle Flintshire Wales in woodland under logs or branches
The third one is probably the same large species as those in the photograph below. These were under a large log with some Shiny Woodlouse in the Anglican Cathedral grounds in Liverpool. I have heard to these referred to as Irish Green slugs but "googling" this did not help. |

| | | Re: Slugs I think the third and fourth are the same - maybe Limax maximus, which goes by several Common names; Leopard, Giant garden slug and Tiger slug. It can reach a length of 20cms.
I may be wrong though! |

| | | Re: Slugs I would suggest Limax flavus rather then the leopard slug
The other two are Arions, possibly Arion circumscriptusfor the pale one and Arion subfuscus for the dark one. They are Arionidae but could do with eye/tentacle colour and view of respiratory pore. Size would be useful but then again they might not be at their full adult size

Yellow Slugs are normally found around habitation- infact we regularly find one in the house at night! |

| | | Re: Slugs Thanks guys for the help, I had an indirect response from the slug guy at Liverpool Museum who has investigated the invertebrates in the Anglican Gardens. He agrees that the large grey mottled ones are Limax maculatus (= Limax pseudoflavus).
Thanks Bugbotherer for the suggestions for the other two. They were both only an inch or so. Neither 'woke up' so I wasn't sure of tentacle colour. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
