Re: Insect of the Day

I didn't see many insects today - but thought I'd add the sighting of my first kidney spot ladybird of the year to this thread There was a hawthorn shield bug sunning itself too.

A beautiful little brown ant - I'm pretty sure this is Myrmica rubra...

Re: Insect of the Day

Nice one - I like the ones when you have to get down on all fours

So what differenciates this from M. ruginodis, which is the more common/widespread one?

All fours? I was flat out for him!

I'm just going by Chinery who says the two waist segments are more rounded for M. rubra and more angular for M. ruginodis. These look more rounded to me.

Re: Insect of the Day

After a overcast start to the day, the late afternoon sunshine brought out quite a few pied shield bugs (Tritomegas bicolor) in the garden. These were the first I've seen this year and I've not seen so many at any one time before.

Re: Insect of the Day

Lots of pinkish versions of the groundhopper Tetrix subulata today, on waste ground by a canal in Huddersfield. I would have had a picture, but the batteries had gone in my flash.

A first for me today!

A lovely male Orange-Tipped butterfly flew straight past my nose while I was in the garden. I'd never seen one before .

Re: Insect of the Day

No photo's yet but I am pleased to say we have a Tawny Mining Bee residing in our garden. The hole just appeared this morning, I am hoping to get an even better photo than my Avatar, Nick.

Re: Insect of the Day

Well I'm a couple of days later than Gaina and Deer Stalker, but I saw my first Orange-tip butterfly of the year today. Two in fact - the second was as I was walking past the Aldbury Nowers reserve near Tring, Herts., which is renowned for its butterflies.

Re: Insect of the Day

Of yesterday, in fact. This lovely four-spotted chaser (I hope the ID is right - never seen one before) emerged from my garden pond.
