don't know what this is though as I know very few flies
hazard a guess at drone fly or a hover-fly

Barbara | Oh yes the ones you're thinking about are also known as Clegs. I got confused as when I looked in my books I noticed there were a few different species of Horse Fly including one that looks very similar to a Drone Fly but it has different patterning on its abdomen.
