There are many species of Chironomus which can only be separated on microscopic characters e.g. length of hairs on the legs, structure of the male genitalia, presence or absence of microtubercles on the head. Your specimen is quite dark so it could be a member of the Chironomus annularius group or even a differnt genus e.g. Glyptotendipes. |

I was using a 45-150mm zoom lens on my Olympus E-510 but the pic would have been considerably better if I had had my Sigma 150mm macro lens on at the time.
