| | insect bite Could someone help me with an insect bite. My friends daughter had some kind of bug stuck in her neck a little more than 24 hours ago and now has swelling lumps around the area, the doctor has spoken to a microbiologist but it would be useful to have some idea what it was. It was grey/green completely round with red legs underneath, it was the size of the blunt end of a pencil or perhaps a bit smaller and no noticeable wings ( but just may not have saw them)any suggestions greatly appreciated. |

| | | re: insect bite Could it be a species of tick? Ticks latch on to skin, extract blood and sometimes are a complete pain to remove without leaving the head inside the skin. I recommend a good bit of tick research. I know it's not the most reliable means of research, but have a look at the Wikipedia page on ticks. I remember getting covered in them when I was little and used to walk through grassland with just shorts on. Wikipedia - Ticks
Hope it helps a little, and please keep us updated.

| | | re: insect bite Was it an insect, would have thought it was more likely to be a Tick, especially if it had been attached for some time; most biting insects do so quite quickly and then scarper |

Did you keep it?
You may find these pages useful, (I'm not trying to scare you, they just have lots of info on ticks) Lymes desease action http://www.lyme.org/gallery/ticks.html

| | | re: insect bite All a bit speculative but I'm assuming that you saved the beast and passed it on to your doctor? You shouldn't panic - local reactions to many invertebrate bites (as well as plant 'stings') are common and should wear off (use anti-histamine cream if they are causing lack of sleep, although I'm sure your GP will have given advice on this).
Hope all goes well - let us know what happens! Quote:

| | | re: insect bite Yes sounds like a tick, have you any pets it could of come from? i regularly get deer ticks whilst out and about. The area is sore, but no poison or long lasting affects are present. I am taking more precautions now though. |

| | | re: insect bite A child's skin is so much more delicate than an adult's so will probably look more inflamed and angry.
Does sound like a tick of some sort, so best that doctor has looked at it.
