| | | how and where to find bugs (dont correct me i know their not bugs!) my new camera comes on monday, fuji finepix s9600
£349 its gonna cost me, but its worth it as far as im concerned... but now i have the little problem of being unable to find the beasties... barring of course the tiny little money spider who lives on my pc screen... keeps the flies away.
btw if anyone could identify it... hes tiny, like 2mm total and light brown i think... not a chance of a photo im afraid... lol, not till monday anyway.
there is a park near where i live, the arrow vally lake and country park, its like a 27 acre man made lake fed from the river arrow with 900 acres of public parkland around it. certainly ducks there, but where do i find the spiders?

| | | Re: how and where to find bugs (dont correct me i know their not bugs!) i'm no expert but i know there are possibly dozens of species of money spider alone so would most likely take an expert to id from a picture.
As for finding spiders now it will be very difficult as most spiders are killed off by the frosts & the spiders that are alive are most likely last years offspring, so would be very small. you will of course find some spiders indoors which have escaped the bad weather.
If you wait until summer & especially autumn you will find loads, as this is when spiders are at their largest. In autumn their webs are coated with dew which makes them easier to spot. hope this helps, al.

| | | Re: how and where to find bugs (dont correct me i know their not bugs!) Try around 260 (ish) species of Linyphiidae or 'money spiders' in the UK and Channel Islands
As for spiders - well not all spiders are killed off by the frost, some live for several years. Some will hunt, but others will hide out till it gets warmer.
Many are synanthropic species so don't look to far away from home, or have sheltered spots to avoid the worst of the weather.
Check out stone walls, thick bushes, window frames, sheds, lofts etc.
You'll find more than you think!

I disturbed this spider when I was shifting house bricks at the side of the patio, so have a look in some places like that and see what you can see,
This is a Funnel Web Spider - Tegenaria Agrestis ,
ID courtesy of Venger and No 9 spider.

| | | Re: how and where to find bugs (dont correct me i know their not bugs!) Under stones, logs, in leaf litter. There will be lots of ground, rove and other beetles as well as centipedes, millipedes, springtails, woodlice .... but be prepared -as soon as you uncover them they'll be off rapidly! However, they're a bit more sluggish (yes, don't forget the molluscs) at this time of the year so you might stand a better chance of snapping something. Although, on the other hand, there are problems with low light levels ....
Good luck - looking forward to seeing pics. Quote:

Duncan, | It's definitely Tegenaria just not sure it's agrestis (JMO)
