| | | Watch out, watch out, the miggies are about Went to look at a job this evening, after a gorgous (sp?) day and as I was there talking to the customer, my legs got really itchy, but because we were talking, I tryed to ignore it, thinking it was a bit of sunburn, or all the cement dust I had on me, but it got to a point where I could ignore it no longer and I just had to scratch. As I looked down at my legs, I noticed loads of midges all over them. It is quite a big patio that the customer wants building and I had a lot of measuring to do and I was being eaten alive by tiny little things.
I once read a good book about midges and have learnt that it is the female that does the biting, while the males do the dancing in them clouds of them that you see, they only eat decaying vegatable matter.
Anyway, be warned that the little ******* are about and they want your blood................Jon ( scratch scratch scratch scratch) |

Also, midges are't our only biting flies-look out for Simuliids (blackflies) which seem particulaly attracted to ankles & calfs, horse flies of course and the keds (Hippoboscidae) wingless, or weak-winged flies that are often mistakenly identified as sheep ticks.

Ked (this one is a swallow parasite as I couldn't find any sheep ked images): http://www.bioimages.org.uk/HTML/P5/P54888.HTM |
