| | | 11-spot ladybird? Can anyone confirm or otherwise? I've not seen one before, and although it's missing a spot or two, this is the closest I can get. It was about 3.5 mm long, crawling amongst heather on Wimbledon Common.
Thanks,
Joe |

| | | Re: 11-spot ladybird? Aha! Yes, that's much better - and explains the habitat, given that it feeds on the larvae of the Heather Leaf Beetle...
Many thanks indeed! |

| | | Re: 11-spot ladybird? Yes, the 'hieroglyphic' mark around the scutellum is very variable.
This is quite an interesting observation - it has been recorded at Wimbledon but this is the only recent observation I'm aware of. Good to know it's surviving! |

| | | Re: 11-spot ladybird? Yes Coccinella hieroglyphica, the habitat gives you a massive clue, As this species feed predominantly on the larvae of Lochmaea suturalis, a heather feeding species. The C.hieroglyphica vary great with abundance from year to year and area to area. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
