| | | Weird Beetle ID Please!!
Hi I found this beetle thing, I killed it by seperating its head. When it was alive it reared it back part of it body like a scorpion.
It was stuck in the door frame of the outhouse of my bungalow. Here is a picture.
It seemed to fight, rather than flight and a little sting or something came out. Never seen anything like it, it is rare or shall I bin it???
ID Please!!

Firstly welcome to WAB! What i think you have there in two parts is a Devils Coach Horse Beetle. It rears its tail end up fast and furious as to sting in it's defence like that of a scorpion but it has no sting. I have seen plenty of these in my life so i believe there still quite common. Shame it got trapped between the door though as i'm always impressed by this one!
All the best-Jez

| | | Re: Wierd Beetle Sorry about its head Yes Devils Coach horse likely Staphylinus olens out of afew closely related species, a fairly common beetle, it does the whole rearing its tail up to look bigger and to avoid a possible attack. No beetle has a sting, this one inclueded. Do try not to kill the for the sake of it , its just looking for a place to hibernate. |

| | | Re: Weird Beetle Jim,
I'm sure you've got the message about them being better alive than dead, so I won't repeat. Have to agree with the others though! Let's hope you don't come across a Stag Beetle. | | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
