| | Cranefly ID... Please would someone confirm which species of Cranefly this is?
I think it's Tipula paludosa but not 100% on it.

| | | Re: Cranefly ID... Hi Ian, Tipula padulosa looks good to me. Running the moth trap has led me to take more of an interest in the by-catch that I have to 'fish' through every morning - including the Crane Flies.

I had since done an internet search and found out that this is a male (which is what was throwing me) and the tips of their abdomens are 'swollen', whereas the female's are pointed so that they can insert their eggs into the soil.

| | | Re: Cranefly ID... Tipula paludosa tend to be autumnal with the very similar Tipula oleracea being more commonly associated with spring. Both like the same grassy habitats.
