Looks like one of the Ichnuemon Wasps...but you probably already knew that. |

| | | Re: Unidentified Insect It is Ophion, based on the wing venation, and I'll go for Ophion luteus - I had one of these the other day, and apparently the paler orange markings on the thorax are diagnostic. It's a miracle for an ichneumon to be so easy... |

| | | Re: Unidentified Insect Lest be a tad cautious about miracles!!
I report an exchange which was on the BWARS board almost exactly a year ago concerning Ophionid Ichneumons.
One of our correspondents [Darrel Watts] wrote: I had some communication with Gavin Broad (now at the National History Museum) on friday. He says that, in the UK, "From now until March, O. obscuratus should be the only Ophion on the wing".
The pale thoracic markings are typical of O. obscuratus.

| | | Re: Unidentified Insect Hi All,
I'd like to learn more about these confusing species. I was getting a lot in my Skinner up to the first week in September, then none until last week, and now I'm getting one or two every night.
I'd assumed they were all Ophion luteus, with the larger and smaller specimens being different sexes, but I'm not so sure now O. obscurata has been thrown into the hat...

| | | Re: Unidentified Insect There are, of course, more species than just Ophion luteus and O. obscurata. Furthermore the genus Netelia also contains large, orange species. With over 3000 species the Ichneumonidae is the largest family of British insects and while, with experience, some species can be identified in the field for most purposes it is necessary to properly preserve i.e. pin specimens for detailed microscopic examination - assuming that there are keys to a particular group. | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
