I saw a Hornet Robberfly a few weeks ago and found out it was nationally scarce when I checked it out.
A friend of mine told me he'd been looking out for this species for 29 years without any luck, and other friends were excited that I'd seen one. So I took it that they aren't seen too often.
Well, I saw a second one at lunchtime today - about 50 metres from my house, on a footpath that leads up onto the Downs.
It is a species that hunts Dung Flies, and so is mainly seen on dung. This one today was on a pile of browned grass cuttings - perhaps it was warming itself in the sun.
Has anyone else seen these regularly elsewhere in the country?
Cheers,
Steven.
