| | What on earth??? went for a bit of nature walk with my son who is 7 and very interested in nature. We turned over a large log the end of which had been stuck in the ground and found what looked like 2 really big wasp/hornet or as he called it 'killer bee' . They were kind of snuggled under leaves and dirt but they were about an inch long with bright yellow face and red legs. couldn't see any more of them as were scared to disturb them!
He (and I) really want to know what they are, please can anyone help us identify them?
thx! |

| | | Re: What on earth??? Sounds like a hornet to me being that size. Wonderful aren't they. If you have a browse around the Gallery there's hornets there that you could identify your find against. It's great to hear you're introducing your son to nature.

| | Re: What on earth??? We have just browsed the Gallery as was suggested and I suspect it is a hornet. Do they hibernate then? is that why they were under a log? We did see some very quick large flying insects as well that we suspect might have been more hornets as well, we moved away quickly though!
thanks for replies! |

| | | Re: What on earth??? With the yellow head and red legs it really does sound like a Hornet. It goes to show how fascinating (and dodgy) it can be to look under logs! |

Where did this event take place? Locality can be very important in nailing down species identifications. The hornet has a somewhat restricted UK range
