It was hovering around our garden today. Almost metallic black, possibly 10mm long, if that.

Nice shot ...looks like a Hoverfly - Melanostoma scalare..

Hi
it looks very dark and I think it may be one of the grey spotted species, if so the most common is - Platycheirus albimanus.
