| | | Knapweed filling station Knapweed has been a magnet for insects and these two are associated with it:
A Conopid fly Physocephala rufipes
and a Carder bumblebee which I think is Bombus muscuorum
Time to set up near some knapweed and see what turns up

| | | Re: Knapweed filling station B. muscorum is really an extremely rare insect in most of England and Wales, and photographing it would be quite a coup. Where was the pic taken? B. muscorum is virtually indistinguishable from the very similar B. humilis, and need microscopic scruty to confirm the id. I certainly wouldn't ever record the presence of either of these species in England purely on photographic evidence. |

Alsager in Cheshire (SJ796548). There are other images, and I do take the point about id'ing from pics

| | | Re: Knapweed filling station It would be absolutely extraordinary to record either B. muscorum or B. humilis from that part of Cheshire. The most likely candidate is B. pascuorum. I would need to look critically at the hairs on the abdomen and on the thorax to be certain though |

| | | Re: Knapweed filling station Just a point. These normally attract loads of burnet moths around here but I've seen very few this year. Has anyone noted their absence? | | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
